5 Questions to Ask Yourself When Considering Building Your Own Website

Published May 30th, 2011 by Farin Innovations

Have you ever built your own house? How about gave yourself a root canal? Ever represent yourself in court? There’s a reason when you want and need something done right, you hire the pro’s.

Website Design and Website Development is no different! There are many, many aspects to building and creating websites that go unseen to the average person.

Let’s discuss a few of them:

Do you really want to represent yourself that way?

Your website is a direct reflection of your brand. If you don’t think your potential customers will see through that self-taught, quick-put-together website you or your nephew built, think again! Just as people notice the professionalism in your customer service or the quality of your product, they will notice the quality of your website. It is very important to make sure your website is handled by the professionals who pay much attention to all the details you’re over-looking.

Don’t you think your competitor spent more time than that on theirs?

To be the best, you have to beat the best. It’s no mystery that you need a website that sets yourself apart from your competition. Chances are your competition knows this and has already hired professionals to build them the best imaginable website possible. Now what makes you think your cookie cutter, learn-as-you-go website will be as good as the one they’re having the pro’s build! Never, never, never overlook your competition!

How do you know what works and what doesn’t work?

Chances are if you are building your own website, you’re not going to be consulting with many people – other than maybe family members. It takes many years and many failed attempts to know what works and what doesn’t, what sells and what doesn’t, what produces leads and what doesn’t, among other things.  Leave it to the professionals to help make sure you are not building a website in vein. Building a website that you simply think looks good (no matter how many online tutorials you read) has a lot more involved than a simple 1-2-3-publish process.

Don’t you want your website to be visually appealing?

Despite the false hope that many online Photoshop tutorials give you, designing your own website is not a good idea. Learning “how to use” Photoshop and knowing what makes a website visually appealing and lead-converting are two completely separate items. Many of today’s top designers are constantly learning new techniques as they become available and always bettering their skills. It takes this level of passion and expertise to make sure you aren’t putting up a website that already looks outdated!

Would you cut corners in the service you offer?

There’s no way you could build a website the same way the pro’s are going to build it. If you build your website yourself, you will undoubtedly cut corners, leading you to miss a ton of detail and other aspects that make a website convert. If you’re a dentist, you wouldn’t recommend someone gives themself a root canal. If you’re a contractor, you wouldn’t recommend someone build their own house. If you’re an attorney, you wouldn’t recommend someone representing themselves in a court of law. I think you get the point. Simply put – let the pro's do what the pro’s do best.
