Considering Building Your Own Website? Ask Yourself These 5 Questions First

Published September 24th, 2011 by Farin Innovations

Sometimes you go straight to the pros. You don’t even bother trying to take the DIY route. Building houses, getting root canals and getting court representation are all examples of those times.

Website design and development may seem like it’s easy enough to be done in DIY fashion, but there are tricky aspects that an untrained person simply isn’t aware of. Following are five questions to consider if you are interested in building your own website.

Do you really want to represent yourself that way?

Do you sell cheap products or provide low quality services? Probably not. You value your customers and want to make sure you give them what they want. You should think of your website the same way. If you do it yourself, it won’t look the same as if you’d hired a quality professional. Your customers will notice that difference. Haven’t you noticed the difference when you went to a “lacking” site?  You don’t want people to see your site in this way. You want them to be pleased and satisfied. No offense, but you probably can’t create that type of result.

Don’t you think your competitor spent more time than that on theirs?

There is a lot of competition, so you’ve got to go above and beyond to really stand out. Chances are, your competitors really understand that. They’ve probably already hired professionals to build their sites. How do you expect to compete with them when you’re doing it yourself? Do you think the site you create will be equal to the one a professional makes? If so, that’s a bad professional (and I don’t mean “bad” in a good way). Don’t underestimate your competitors. They are not underestimating you.

How do you know what works and what doesn’t work?

When it comes to the success of website, real trial and error takes years. It doesn’t come from talking to your friends and family members. It doesn’t come from trying one template this week and another next week. You need the input of professionals who have been doing this for years. They know the real pitfalls to avoid. You don’t. Reading tutorials and following the simple instructions of DIY sites will give you a site, but it won’t be the best site.

Don’t you want your website to be visually appealing?

Just because you know how to use Photoshop doesn’t mean you need to be making a website for your business. There is a science to creating a site that encourages lead conversion. The colors, the fonts, the text to white space ratio: it all matters. A professional will know which things to avoid. All you know is how to use the tools. Do it yourself and you risk putting up a site that is in need of a desperate makeover from the start.

Would you cut corners in the service you offer?

You don’t cut corners with your customers. You value them too much. You should feel the same way about your website. A professional is going to cover everything. You probably won’t. You will cover the basics that the tutorial teaches you to cover. This will result in a simple, cookie-cutter site that looks nice, but basic. It won’t have the professional look your competitors’ sites have. You don’t want your customers to think you don’t care that much. Let them know how much you care by getting a professionally designed website.
