Website Renovation – Is it time to redo your website?

Published December 2nd, 2011 by Farin Innovations

Understanding when it’s time to give your website a good rebuilding is very important in today’s fast-paced world.  Sometimes businesses can get away with a few cosmetic improvements, whereas others simply grow far too old and need to be redone completely, from the ground up.  If you find yourself looking at your site wondering if it’s time for an upgrade, consider several factors before making a final decision.  These factors will also let you know what to include should you do decide to give your site a makeover.

Visuals

Early on, websites tended to have crazy backgrounds, annoying background music, and a lot of busy things going on that tended to ward of visitors.  Today, things have drastically changed.  Now it’s all about being streamlined, easy navigation, crystal clear images and fonts, and a strong impression.  Once certain elements were impossible – not anymore.  Consider this – is your site one that you would like to visit?  Or is the background too bold?  Are there too many ads?  A site has to be visually appealing first and foremost; this is your website’s first impression on the visitor, so make sure it’s a good one.

Smart Tech

Let’s face it – technology is all but moving at the speed of light these days.  But if it could, it probably would!  Find out what technologies were used to craft your website and see if there are ways that newer tech can be used to improve it.  Once hot technologies are starting to be pushed out by others.  For example, Flash was once the height of online technology; moving images and text on your site gave it great credibility.  But with the evolution of search engines and other methods of coding, AJAX is now starting to take precedent.  Instead of Google seeing a single flash file, it sees multiples images and text.  That means better rank – all thanks to AJAX.

Be Social

There is hardly a person out there these days that doesn’t know about Facebook or some other social media site.  From Twitter to LinkedIn, MySpace and more, there’s a good chance that people are connected to at least one social media site.  If you haven’t already implemented social media into your site, when you rebuild, that needs to be a priority.  This way people can interact with your business, share your site with hundreds of others, and help you build a larger customer base.  Remember that social media makes for excellent free marketing!

Search Engine Optimization

Also known as SEO.  If you haven’t utilized SEO on your site, then you need to do so, whether giving your site a cosmetic overhaul or rebuilding it completely.  SEO is what gives your site the power to be seen by search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing.  But it isn’t just about keyword cramming – you have to use SEO in intelligent ways so that search engines will see your site as a truly useful site to the people doing the search.  If you aren’t sure how to get SEO going, hire a professional – it will be well worth it.

Does your site pass the test?  Does it need an overhaul or just some simple tweaking?  Get your site in the best shape so your business can really shine.
